2 Timothy 3:12
“Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.”
What does 2 Timothy 3:12 mean?
Paul isn't painting a cheerful picture here, but he's being honest about what faithfulness costs. When you commit to following Jesus and living by his values, you'll sometimes bump up against a world that doesn't share those values, and people may push back, mock you, or make life harder in small or large ways. The good news wrapped up in this warning is that persecution isn't a sign you're doing something wrong—it's often a sign you're doing something right. This verse gives permission to struggle, to expect difficulty, and to know you're not alone in facing it. Paul wrote this to Timothy as encouragement, not discouragement, because naming the cost upfront helps us prepare spiritually rather than being blindsided by disappointment when faith gets uncomfortable.
