You therefore, my child, be strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

What does 2 Timothy 2:1 mean?

Paul is writing to Timothy, his young protégé in ministry, during a difficult time. Rather than telling him to toughen up through willpower alone, Paul points him to something deeper: the grace, or unmerited favor and power, that flows from Christ. The idea is that Timothy's strength doesn't come from within himself but from staying connected to Jesus and leaning on his goodness. This is an especially tender word for anyone feeling exhausted or inadequate. Paul recognizes that Timothy faces real opposition and challenges ahead, but he's saying the way forward isn't by grinding harder. It's by letting yourself be held up by something (or someone) bigger than your own resources. That grace is already there, already yours in Christ, waiting to sustain you.
