What does 2 Timothy 1:1 mean?
Paul opens this letter by reminding Timothy (and us) where his authority comes from: not from his own ambition or credentials, but from God's deliberate choice. When Paul says his apostleship exists "through the will of God," he's anchoring everything that follows in something solid and trustworthy, not his own strength. The phrase "according to the promise of the life which is in Christ Jesus" points to something bigger than Paul's role as an apostle. He's saying that his entire purpose, and Timothy's calling as well, connects to God's ancient promise of eternal life made real through Jesus. This is Paul's way of saying: the reason I'm writing to you matters because it all flows from something God guaranteed long ago.
