What does 2 Samuel 7:5 mean?
God is gently challenging David's assumption through the prophet Nathan. David wants to build a permanent temple for God, thinking it's the right next step after his own success and stability. But God reminds him that he's never actually required such a building, having been perfectly present with his people through tent and journey for generations. This isn't a rejection of David's good intentions, but an invitation to reconsider what God actually needs from him. Sometimes when we're doing well, we assume we know what God wants next, without stopping to ask. God's question here opens space for something different, something that will matter more in the long run.
