What does 2 Samuel 6:8 mean?
David's anger here comes from shock and grief. Just moments before, his men were joyfully transporting the ark of the covenant back to Jerusalem, but when the oxen stumbled, Uzzah reached out to steady it and was instantly struck dead by God. From David's perspective, a good man died trying to protect something sacred, and it felt unbearably harsh. What helps here is knowing that God had actually given clear instructions about how the ark should be handled, by priests and using poles, not by cart. Uzzah's death wasn't random cruelty but the consequence of approaching holiness without reverence. Yet David's pain is completely real and human. He names the place "Perez Uzzah" (meaning "the breaking out against Uzzah") so no one would forget what happened there, and his initial anger shows us that even people of deep faith sometimes struggle to understand God's ways in the moment. That struggle doesn't disqualify us from knowing him.
