What does 2 Samuel 4:9 mean?
David is responding to two men who just killed Saul's son Ishbosheth, hoping to gain favor by removing a rival to David's throne. Before hearing their reward, David makes a solemn oath: "As the Lord lives, who has redeemed my soul out of all adversity." He's calling on God as his witness, essentially saying his entire life has been marked by God's deliverance—which it had been, through years of being hunted by Saul. What follows this oath shows David's character: he refuses to reward murderers, even when their deed seems politically convenient. By invoking God's faithfulness to him through difficulty, David reminds himself (and them) that his kingdom must be built on righteousness, not bloodshed.
