What does 2 Samuel 3:12 mean?
Abner was the powerful military commander who had been serving Saul's house, but he was beginning to see the writing on the wall. David was clearly God's chosen king, and Abner recognized that backing the right person would secure his own position and influence. His question, "Whose is the land?" wasn't really a question at all, but an acknowledgment that the land belonged to whoever could claim it, and that person was David. What Abner is offering here is a negotiated surrender of sorts, one that would benefit them both. He's essentially saying: "If you make peace with me and guarantee my place in your new kingdom, I can deliver the northern tribes to your rule." It's a pragmatic political move, born partly from self-interest but also from a realistic assessment of power. For David, this was a significant turning point, because it meant the fragmented kingdom might actually be united without a prolonged civil war.
