What does 2 Samuel 24:12 mean?
God gives David a choice, and it's a sobering one. After David has sinned by taking a census (which showed pride in military strength rather than trust in God), the prophet Gad comes to him with three possible consequences. Rather than simply punishing David without his knowledge, God offers him agency in how he'll face the consequences of his actions. It's an act of mercy wrapped in accountability, allowing David some control over his own judgment. The three options he's given (famine, war, or plague, as the next verses explain) are all terrible, but the point is that David won't be crushed by an arbitrary or hidden punishment. He gets to decide how he'll answer for what he's done.
