What does 2 Samuel 22:12 mean?
When David wrote this psalm (which also appears as Psalm 18), he was describing God as utterly beyond human reach and comprehension. The "darkness" and "thick clouds" aren't signs of God's absence but rather a kind of protective mystery that surrounds God's presence, making God incomprehensible to human eyes. David is saying that God dwells in a realm we cannot fully see or penetrate, which paradoxically makes God both distant and safe. This image brings comfort to many people because it suggests that God's nature is far grander than our struggles and worries. When life feels chaotic or we're confused about what God is doing, this verse reminds us that God's ways are sometimes hidden from us, not because God is uncaring, but because God operates on a scale and with knowledge we cannot grasp.
