Behold, the Cushite came. The Cushite said, “News for my lord the king, for Yahweh has avenged you today of all those who rose up against you.”

What does 2 Samuel 18:31 mean?

A messenger has run to King David with urgent news about a battle, and the message itself carries weight: God has delivered David from his enemies. The Cushite (a runner from the region of Cush, in Africa) represents the kind of person who would be sent with important announcements in that ancient world, someone trusted to carry news quickly and accurately. What makes this moment tender is that David has just learned his son Absalom, who led a rebellion against him, has been killed in the fighting. So even as the messenger proclaims victory, David is about to receive the worst part of the news. The verse reminds us that military success and personal loss can arrive in the same moment, and that what looks like God's vindication from the outside might feel like heartbreak on the inside.
