What does 2 Samuel 17:23 mean?
Ahithophel was King David's trusted advisor who betrayed him during a rebellion led by David's own son Absalom. When David's other counselor Hushai managed to convince Absalom to reject Ahithophel's military strategy, Ahithophel realized his advice would be ignored and his plans would fail. Rather than face the consequences of his betrayal, he returned home, got his affairs in order, and took his own life.
