What does 2 Samuel 15:29 mean?
When King David fled Jerusalem during his son Absalom's rebellion, the priests Zadok and Abiathar wanted to follow him into exile. But David told them to stay behind, return the ark of the covenant (the chest holding the stone tablets and representing God's presence), and serve as his eyes and ears in the city. So they brought the ark back to Jerusalem and remained there as David's faithful informants, showing that sometimes the most important thing we can do is stay put and be present where we're needed, even when loyalty might pull us elsewhere. David's trust in them, and their willingness to fulfill this harder role rather than the expected one, speaks to how God sometimes calls us to serve in ways that look like stepping back rather than stepping forward.
