What does 2 Samuel 15:22 mean?

When David fled Jerusalem during his son Absalom's rebellion, this foreign soldier named Ittai refused to abandon him, even though he had no family obligation to stay. David, perhaps trying to give him an honorable way out, tells him to go ahead and cross the Jordan River with all his household. Ittai's immediate obedience shows a loyalty that transcends convenience or self-interest, and it quietly illustrates how David's character inspired devotion even in outsiders. In a moment when everything was falling apart for the king, this small act of faithfulness from an unexpected source must have been deeply comforting.
