What does 2 Samuel 12:8 mean?
God is speaking through the prophet Nathan to King David about all the blessings He had already given him, making David's choice to take Bathsheba and arrange her husband's death even more stark. David had been elevated from a shepherd boy to king of Israel and Judah, given wealth and power beyond measure, yet he still wanted what belonged to someone else. The point isn't that God's gifts should make us arrogant or entitled, but rather that when we have genuine security in what we've already been given, the desperate grasping for more reveals something broken in our hearts. Sometimes recognizing how much we already have, and how freely it was given, can awaken us to the ways we're chasing things that don't belong to us or won't actually satisfy us.
