What does 2 Samuel 12:17 mean?
David is grieving the death of his infant son. For days he fasted and lay on the ground in deep mourning, but when the child actually died, something shifted in him. He got up, washed himself, and returned to normal life, which shocked his servants who expected him to continue his visible displays of grief. This verse captures that tender moment when his household elders try to help him off the ground, perhaps thinking he needs support or that it's time to move forward. But David refuses. He's not ready yet to be lifted up or to share a meal with them, even though his grief has fundamentally changed shape. Sometimes the people who love us see us suffering and want to fix it immediately, but this moment reminds us that acceptance of loss takes time, and sometimes the most loving thing we can do for someone grieving is to simply let them sit with their pain a little longer, without rushing them toward normal.
