What does 2 Samuel 1:2 mean?
A man arrives at David's camp carrying devastating news, and his appearance tells the story before his words do. His torn clothes and dirt-covered head were signs of mourning and grief in that culture, physical expressions of deep anguish over loss. When he falls before David in respect, we sense both his despair and the weight of what he's about to report. This moment captures something true about how we carry hard news: we often show it in our bodies before we speak it. The messenger's posture and appearance prepare David (and us) to receive something that will change everything.
