“The king arose in the night, and said to his servants, “I will now show you what the Syrians have done to us. They know that we are hungry. Therefore are they gone out of the camp to hide themselves in the field, saying, ‘When they come out of the city, we shall take them alive, and get into the city.’””
What does 2 Kings 7:12 mean?
The king of Israel wakes in the middle of the night, convinced he's figured out a Syrian military trap. He's certain the enemy army has abandoned their siege not out of kindness, but as bait, planning to ambush his desperate, starving people the moment they venture out looking for food. His fear makes a kind of logic, especially when you're surrounded, hungry, and accustomed to betrayal. What makes this moment poignant is that the king is wrong, though he doesn't know it yet. The Syrians actually fled because God had caused them to hear sounds of a massive army approaching, sending them into panicked retreat. Sometimes when we're suffering or afraid, our minds construct explanations that feel completely reasonable but miss what's actually happening. The king is about to discover that God has already moved on his behalf, even while he's still preparing for the worst.
