What does 2 Kings 6:21 mean?
The king of Israel has just witnessed something miraculous: the prophet Elisha has opened his eyes to see an invisible army of angels surrounding them, protecting them from an enemy siege. In his fear and awe, the king's first instinct is to ask Elisha for permission to attack the very forces that came to defend him. This moment captures a very human response to encountering God's power: panic, and then wanting to strike back. The king is so rattled that he repeats his question, showing his agitation. But Elisha is about to teach him something different, redirecting him away from violence and toward trust. Sometimes when we're afraid or overwhelmed, our immediate instinct is to fight or defend ourselves, but God often invites us to pause and see what he's already doing on our behalf, even when we can't perceive it yet.
