What does 2 Kings 4:14 mean?

Elisha's servant Gehazi has just observed a wealthy woman's life and noticed what's missing from it, what would have brought her joy and security. In that ancient world, a son meant continuation of the family line, provision in old age, and social standing, especially for a woman whose husband was aging. Gehazi isn't being nosy; he's recognizing a deep longing and speaking it aloud to his master, almost as a question: "Couldn't something be done about this?" This moment opens the door for Elisha to step in with a miracle, but it starts with someone simply seeing another person's hidden heartache and naming it with compassion. Sometimes being noticed in what we're lacking, what we've grieved, is the first step toward healing.
