What does 2 Kings 3:16 mean?
The prophet Elisha is speaking to the kings of Israel, Judah, and Edom during a desperate military campaign. They're facing drought and running out of water, ready to abandon their mission. Instead of offering sympathy or supernatural rescue, Elisha calls them to dig—to do the practical work of preparing the ground as an act of faith and obedience. This moment reminds us that sometimes God asks us to participate in our own deliverance rather than waiting passively for miracles. The trenches would later fill with water that came mysteriously overnight (verse 17), but the kings had to do their part first. There's something deeply human and hopeful in this: we're invited to work alongside God's purposes, not just receive from them.
