What does 2 Kings 3:1 mean?

Jehoram inherited his father Ahab's throne during a time when Israel and Judah were both ruled by kings from neighboring kingdoms. This verse marks the beginning of his reign and sets the historical timeline so we can understand what happens next in Israel's story. While Jehoram would later turn away from some of his family's worst practices, he still led Israel through conflict and spiritual compromise. The simple act of noting when he began to rule helps us see that these ancient kingdoms were real places with real rulers whose decisions affected countless lives, much like leaders today shape the world around us.
