2 Kings 23:2

The king went up to Yahweh’s house, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, with the priests, the prophets, and all the people, both small and great; and he read in their hearing all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in Yahweh’s house.

What does 2 Kings 23:2 mean?

King Josiah gathered the entire nation, from the greatest leaders to the smallest children, and read God's covenant to them all together. This moment happened after workers discovered an ancient book of the covenant hidden in the temple, and the king wanted everyone to hear what God had promised and required of them. It's a picture of someone in power taking God's words seriously enough to share them publicly and invite his whole community to listen and respond. What strikes many people is the inclusiveness of it, the sense that God's message wasn't meant for an elite few but for everyone, regardless of their status or age.
