What does 2 Kings 17:2 mean?
King Hoshea of Israel walked a destructive path, turning away from God in ways that brought judgment on his nation. Yet the text notes something almost paradoxical about him: while he was unfaithful, he wasn't quite as openly defiant as some of his predecessors had been. It's a strange kind of "credit" to receive, like saying someone's wrongdoing was at least a little less brazen than it might have been. This tells us something important about how God sees our choices. Even when we're heading in the wrong direction, the degree of our rebellion, our willingness to keep some restraint, and perhaps moments when we don't double down on our mistakes, all matter. It doesn't excuse the fundamental problem, but it matters. Many people in difficult seasons find themselves here too, aware they're not where they should be spiritually but also aware they haven't completely surrendered to every temptation. That recognition can be a place where honesty with God begins.
