“Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. He didn’t do that which was right in Yahweh his God’s eyes, like David his father.”
What does 2 Kings 16:2 mean?
Ahaz became king as a young man and ruled Judah for sixteen years, but his reign was marked by choices that turned him away from God. The comparison to his ancestor David isn't meant to shame Ahaz so much as to show the contrast, since David, despite his own failings, genuinely sought to follow God's ways. Ahaz's story is one many of us can relate to, where someone in a position to lead well instead makes choices that pull them further from what's right, often with consequences that ripple outward to the people around them.
