2 Kings 13:11
“He did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight. He didn’t depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel to sin; but he walked in them.”
What does 2 Kings 13:11 mean?
This verse describes King Jehoash of Israel, who ruled during a spiritually troubled time in the northern kingdom. Even though he had opportunities to turn things around and lead his people back to God, he chose to continue the same destructive religious practices that previous kings had introduced, specifically the worship of golden calves instead of the true God. What makes this passage poignant is the sense of a pattern repeating itself. Jehoash didn't invent these sins, he inherited them, yet he deliberately chose to keep walking in them rather than break the cycle. It's a reminder of how easy it can be to accept "the way things have always been done" without questioning whether those ways are actually leading us toward God or away from him. Even when we have the freedom and power to change course, sometimes we just keep going in the same direction because it's familiar.
