What does 2 Kings 12:1 mean?
When Jehoash became king at just seven years old, he was placed in an incredibly vulnerable position, yet the text tells us he reigned for forty years. His mother, Zibiah, is specifically named here, which hints at her protective influence during those formative years when he couldn't rule alone. What makes this opening important is that it sets the stage for a reign that would later show both promise and compromise: Jehoash did what was right early on under the guidance of the priest Jehoiada, but eventually drifted from that path once he gained full independence. Sometimes our beginnings don't tell the whole story, and even a long reign can show how we change as our circumstances and influences shift.
