“The two companies of you, even all who go out on the Sabbath, shall keep the watch of Yahweh’s house around the king.”
What does 2 Kings 11:7 mean?
Joash became king of Judah when he was just a small child, and a priest named Jehoiada had to protect him from people who wanted him dead. This verse captures part of Jehoiada's security plan: he organized the palace guards into two rotating groups so that even on the Sabbath (when people normally rested from work), there would always be armed guards surrounding the young king and protecting God's temple. What's touching here is that people took their commitment to keeping the king safe so seriously that they were willing to break the usual Sabbath rest to do it. Sometimes protecting what matters most requires us to step outside our normal patterns, and sometimes the most faithful thing we can do isn't following every rule but rather defending someone vulnerable who's depending on us.
