2 John 1:4
“I rejoice greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, even as we have been commanded by the Father.”
What does 2 John 1:4 mean?
John is writing to a church leader (likely an elder woman) and telling her how glad he is to hear that some of her spiritual children, the members she's been teaching and nurturing, are living out their faith genuinely. There's something deeply reassuring in what he's saying: after all the struggles and questions in the early church, he's encountered people who are actually following through on what Jesus taught. His joy isn't abstract or distant, it's personal and grounded in watching real people live with integrity. When John says this living in truth is what "we have been commanded," he's reminding her (and us) that authentic faith isn't an optional extra or a nice idea, it's the core of what it means to follow Jesus.
