What does 2 Corinthians 7:1 mean?
Paul is inviting us into a kind of spiritual housekeeping, grounded in all the encouragement he's just shared about God's presence and fatherhood. When he talks about cleansing ourselves from defilement of flesh and spirit, he means letting go of the things that pull us away from God, whether that's behaviors we know aren't right or attitudes that keep us stuck in shame or bitterness. The phrase "perfecting holiness" doesn't mean becoming flawless, but rather growing toward wholeness and living in a way that honors God. That "fear of God" at the end isn't cowering terror, but rather a deep reverence and respect that naturally makes us want to live better, especially when we remember how faithful and loving God has proven to be.
