What does 2 Chronicles 6:42 mean?
Solomon is praying at the dedication of the temple, asking God to remember the covenant he made with his father David. When he asks God not to "turn away the face" of his anointed, he's using ancient language for "don't reject me" or "don't abandon your promise." He's essentially saying, "You were faithful to David, and I'm asking you to be faithful to me too, because I'm walking in his footsteps." This prayer speaks to something we all need in hard moments: the assurance that God hasn't forgotten his commitments to us. Solomon knew that building the temple was an enormous responsibility, and he was asking God to show up and be present through it. When you're facing something big and uncertain, it's okay to remind yourself (and God, in prayer) of times he's been faithful before.
