What does 2 Chronicles 6:17 mean?

Solomon is dedicating the newly built temple and asking God to fulfill the promise made to his father David generations earlier, that David's line would endure and his descendants would build God's house. There's something deeply human in this prayer, the son essentially saying, "God, you kept your word to my father, and now I'm standing in the proof of it, so please keep being faithful." It's a reminder that God's promises aren't forgotten when generations pass, and that we can trust what he has spoken even when we're waiting to see it come to pass.
