“So Uzziah slept with his fathers; and they buried him with his fathers in the field of burial which belonged to the kings, for they said, “He is a leper.” Jotham his son reigned in his place.”
What does 2 Chronicles 26:23 mean?
King Uzziah had been a capable and successful ruler, but his pride eventually led him to sin by entering the temple and burning incense, which only priests were allowed to do. As punishment, God struck him with leprosy, and he spent the rest of his life isolated from public life and worship. Even in death, this disease separated him: while he was honored enough to be buried in the royal cemetery, he couldn't be placed in the actual tombs with his ancestors, but rather in a separate field nearby. This ending is both sad and instructive. It shows how one moment of arrogance can diminish a legacy, yet it also reflects God's mercy, since Uzziah wasn't denied burial altogether or publicly shamed in a disgraceful way. His son Jotham stepped into leadership and continued the kingdom, suggesting that while personal consequences matter, God's plans for his people continue forward.
