What does 1 Timothy 5:8 mean?
Paul is addressing something serious here: when we claim to follow Jesus but neglect the people depending on us, we're contradicting everything faith is supposed to mean. He's talking about the basic responsibility of caring for family members, especially those living in your home who need your support. The weight of his language, "worse than an unbeliever," isn't meant to shame you if you're struggling to make ends meet. Rather, it's calling out a kind of hypocrisy, where someone has the means to help but chooses not to. Even people outside the faith generally understand that taking care of your own household matters. So when someone claims faith in Jesus but abandons that responsibility, they're actually rejecting one of faith's most fundamental expressions: love shown through concrete care.
