What does 1 Timothy 2:1 mean?
Paul is encouraging Timothy (and through him, the early church) to make prayer a priority, and to make it expansive. He's asking believers to lift up requests and intercessions for everyone, not just people they like or people in their own community, but genuinely "all men"—the sick, the lost, the powerful, even enemies. What makes this radical is the inclusion of thanksgiving alongside the asking. Paul isn't saying pray only when desperate; he's saying cultivate a posture of gratitude even while you're bringing your concerns to God. This combination of honest petition with grateful hearts keeps prayer from becoming bitter or self-centered. If you're in a season where certain people are hard to pray for, or where prayer itself feels distant, this verse is an invitation to start small: bring one thing you're grateful for, lift one person up, and let that be enough. The practice itself, offered sincerely, opens something in us.
