What does 1 Thessalonians 5:15 mean?
When someone hurts us, our first instinct is often to hurt back. Paul is gently pushing back against that impulse, reminding the Thessalonians that retaliation only spreads more damage. Instead, he's calling them to something harder and more transformative: actively pursuing what's good, both toward those who've wronged them and toward everyone around them. This doesn't mean pretending the hurt didn't happen or staying in unsafe situations. It means refusing to let bitterness be your compass. When you choose kindness or fairness or justice pursued rightly instead of revenge, you break the cycle that so easily repeats itself in relationships and communities. That shift in how we respond, Paul suggests, is what actually creates change.
