What does 1 Thessalonians 3:4 mean?
Paul is reminding the Thessalonians that he had already warned them: following Jesus would involve hardship and suffering. He's not shocked or dismayed by their struggles, and he wants them to remember that this wasn't a surprise or a sign something went wrong spiritually. Rather than cushioning them with false promises, Paul had been honest about the cost of faith from the beginning, and now that difficulties have come, he's pointing out that he told them so. There's something steadying in this kind of honesty, especially when you're walking through pain. It can actually deepen trust when someone has been truthful with you about the hard parts, rather than only showing you the easy ones.
