1 Samuel 9:4

He passed through the hill country of Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they didn’t find them. Then they passed through the land of Shaalim, and there they weren’t there. Then he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they didn’t find them.

What does 1 Samuel 9:4 mean?

Saul is out searching for his father's lost donkeys, traveling through different regions with his servant. The passage captures the futility of the search: they comb through one area after another, but the donkeys remain nowhere to be found. It's a simple, almost mundane moment that shows how ordinary circumstances can set the stage for something much bigger, since this fruitless journey is what eventually leads Saul to the prophet Samuel and, ultimately, to becoming Israel's first king. Sometimes when we're stuck searching for one thing, we're actually being guided toward something far more important than we realized.
