What does 1 Samuel 8:7 mean?
God tells Samuel not to take it personally when the people demand a human king instead of trusting in God's leadership. What feels like rejection of Samuel is really a deeper problem: the people are trying to replace God himself with earthly power and security. This is a turning point in Israel's story, where they move away from direct reliance on God toward wanting what other nations have, a visible ruler they can control and see.
