What does 1 Samuel 8:1 mean?
Samuel had been Israel's faithful leader for decades, but now age was catching up with him. Rather than let his position fade away without succession, he appointed his own sons as judges to handle the legal and spiritual matters that had been his responsibility. It seemed like a natural plan, the kind of thing leaders often do, but it set off a chain of events that would shift Israel's entire future. His sons, as it turned out, weren't interested in walking their father's honest path, and their corruption would prompt the people to demand something Samuel never wanted to give them: a king.
