What does 1 Samuel 6:7 mean?
The Philistines had captured Israel's sacred Ark of the Covenant and were suffering plagues as a result. In desperation, they decided to send it back, but they wanted to test whether their misfortunes truly came from Israel's God. They built a new cart and chose two cows that had never been worked, reasoning that untrained animals following an inexplicable path would prove divine intervention if the Ark reached Israel. The cows' calves were separated and kept behind, so maternal instinct alone couldn't explain the animals' behavior. This was essentially the Philistines saying, "If these cows somehow know to go to Israel on their own, we'll know we're dealing with something supernatural." It's a vivid reminder of how people sometimes ask God for signs when they're desperate enough to actually listen.
