“They said, “If you send away the ark of the God of Israel, don’t send it empty; but by all means return a trespass offering to him. Then you will be healed, and it will be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.””
What does 1 Samuel 6:3 mean?
The Philistines had captured Israel's sacred ark and were suffering plagues because of it, so their priests advised them to return it—but not without making restitution. A "trespass offering" was a sacrifice meant to repair a broken relationship and show genuine remorse. The idea here is that you can't just hand back something you've wronged someone over and expect things to be okay; there has to be acknowledgment of the harm you've caused. When we've damaged something precious—whether in our relationships with God or others—simply returning to the status quo won't heal the breach. Real restoration requires us to face what we've done and make things right, which opens the door for healing and clarity about the path forward.
