What does 1 Samuel 6:20 mean?
After the ark of the covenant mysteriously killed seventy men in their town, the people of Beth Shemesh were overwhelmed by the reality of God's power and holiness. Their question isn't really asking for an answer, but expressing their terror and sense of unworthiness, much like saying "How could we ever be safe around such a holy God?" They're asking this partly in despair and partly as a plea for the ark to be taken away from them to somewhere else. This moment teaches us something real about encountering the divine: when we truly sense God's presence and his difference from us, it can be both awe-inspiring and terrifying. What's important is that their fear, though raw, shows they understood something important, that God is not to be trifled with. Their anxiety came from trying to open the ark out of curiosity rather than reverence, so their fear was actually a kind of spiritual wake-up call.
