What does 1 Samuel 6:16 mean?
The Philistines had sent the Ark of the Covenant back to Israel on a cart pulled by cows, not knowing whether the God of Israel would actually reclaim it. When these five Philistine rulers watched from a distance and saw the cart arrive safely at Beth Shemesh (an Israelite town), they got their answer, and they headed straight home. This moment marks the Ark's journey out of captivity, though the real work of restoration was just beginning for Israel. Sometimes we need to witness something ourselves to believe it, and these leaders did just that before withdrawing.
