What does 1 Samuel 5:3 mean?
The Philistines had captured the ark of the covenant, thinking they'd gained power over Israel's God, but the next morning they found their god Dagon toppled face-down in front of it. The image is striking: they picked him back up and stood him upright again, as if nothing happened, even though something clearly had. This is the beginning of a pattern where the ark brings trouble wherever the Philistines take it, yet they keep trying to manage the situation on their own terms instead of returning it. It speaks to how we sometimes encounter evidence that contradicts what we want to believe, but we ignore it and carry on anyway, hoping the problem will go away if we just put things back the way they were.
