What does 1 Samuel 5:11 mean?
After the ark of God brought plague and disaster to the Philistines, their leaders realized they couldn't keep it without facing destruction. They gathered together to make a hard decision: they would return what they'd captured, even though taking the ark had seemed like a victory at first. What looked like a trophy had become a curse, and they recognized that the God of Israel was far more powerful than they'd imagined. This moment captures something true about resisting God's will or holding onto what doesn't belong to us. The Philistines discovered that you can't contain or control the presence of the living God through force or possession.
