What does 1 Samuel 31:7 mean?
This passage describes the tragic aftermath of Israel's defeat at Mount Gilboa, where King Saul and his sons were killed in battle. When the surviving Israelites heard the news and saw their army scattered, panic spread so quickly that entire towns were abandoned. The Philistines, Israel's longtime enemies, simply moved in and took over the land without further resistance. It's a sobering picture of what happens when hope collapses and fear takes over, but it also sets up the larger story: God wasn't finished with Israel.
