“Then all the wicked men and worthless fellows, of those who went with David, answered and said, “Because they didn’t go with us, we will not give them anything of the plunder that we have recovered, except to every man his wife and his children, that he may lead them away, and depart.””
What does 1 Samuel 30:22 mean?
When David and his men returned from battle to find their families had been captured, some of the exhausted soldiers wanted to exclude those too weak to fight from sharing in the recovered plunder. These "wicked men" were essentially saying, "You didn't help us win, so you don't deserve a share of what we took back," offering only the families themselves as consolation. David, however, disagreed sharply with this reasoning and later established a rule that everyone who stayed to guard the supplies deserved equal shares with those who fought. This moment shows how hardship can bring out selfishness in people, and how leadership matters when fairness is being decided in a community's most difficult moments.
