What does 1 Samuel 3:11 mean?

God is warning young Samuel that something dramatic and difficult is about to happen in Israel, something so significant that everyone who hears about it will be shocked and shaken. The image of ears tingling captures that physical response people have to shocking news, the kind of thing you can't unhear or ignore. This is God preparing Samuel for the weight of the prophetic message he'll soon have to deliver to his mentor Eli, which involves announcing judgment on Eli's unfaithful sons and the downfall of his household. Sometimes God asks us to speak hard truths, and this moment shows that God doesn't spring such tasks on us without warning or preparation.
