What does 1 Samuel 28:16 mean?

Samuel's words cut to the heart of Saul's desperation. Saul has been consulting a medium to reach Samuel's spirit because he's terrified and abandoned by God, yet he's come seeking guidance anyway, as if Samuel could offer help that God himself had already withheld. The prophet points out the futility of this: you're running from God, so why come to me? It's a moment of harsh honesty, showing that spiritual distance can't be bridged by tricks or workarounds. Sometimes when we're afraid and feel far from God, we exhaust ourselves looking for answers everywhere else, when what we really need is to face the distance itself and ask what it means.
