What does 1 Samuel 28:13 mean?

Saul has just asked a medium (a person claiming to contact the dead) to bring up the spirit of the prophet Samuel, who had died. When she claims to see something appearing, Saul tries to calm her so she'll describe what she's experiencing. Her answer is deliberately vague and mysterious, using the word "god" in a way that could mean a divine being, a ghost, or simply a powerful spirit, since she wants to maintain an air of supernatural authority. This moment captures Saul's desperation. He's facing a battle and feels abandoned by God, so he's breaking his own laws (he had actually banned mediums from Israel) to seek guidance from beyond. The scene reminds us that when we're afraid and searching for answers, we're sometimes tempted to pursue shortcuts or forbidden paths rather than waiting for God's direction, even though those detours usually lead us further astray rather than toward the help we actually need.
